In the operating room , we often believe that perfection is everything. Every suture must be placed with absolute precision Every incision must be flawlessly concealed. And every step must be impeccable.
I used to be that way—a surgeon who set extremely high standards for himself, leaving almost no room for mistakes.
I believed it was my duty to deliver the very best in every single case.
Yet, in my relentless pursuit of perfection, I began to realize that I was growing exhausted—both physically and emotionally.
Then one day, I encountered an experience that taught me a profound lesson: perfection is not always the answer.
It came from a case in which I did everything possible to achieve the most perfect outcome. Every step followed the plan precisely.
nd yet, the patient still felt dissatisfied.
Not because the result was poor—but because what they truly needed was not a flawless outcome, but understanding.
That moment changed my perspective.
I began to understand that the role of a doctor is not limited to creating neat sutures or perfectly hidden scars but also to healing emotions alongside the body.
When I allowed myself to loosen the grip of expectations that demanded perfection down to every millimeter, and instead focused on listening communicating and embracing the humanity of both my patients and myself, I discovered something unexpected.
I became a happier doctor with stronger relationships within my team and patients who felt truly cared for.
Most importantly, I continued to work with the highest level of dedication—but with a much lighter heart.
Today, I still value precision and meticulous craftsmanship but I choose to add gentleness to every step of the process.
Because under the bright lights of the operating room, what patients truly seek may not be the most perfect doctor, but one who understands and stands beside them with genuine care.
