After finishing patient consultations since early morning, I glanced at the clock—it was almost 2 p.m. I was sitting alone in the consultation room when my eyes fell on a small box of my trusted pens on the desk. I picked one up and suddenly realized…perhaps genuine care for patients can begin with something as simple as a single pen.
For me, the pen used to draw surgical markings on a patient’s face is never chosen at random. Sometimes I spend 2–3 hours selecting the right one, because it must meet three essential criteria: Adheres well to the skin and does not fade easily Waterproof and resistant to cleansing solutions Sharp, precise lines with a thickness of 0.3–0.5 mm for maximum accuracy
Simply by looking at the color and line quality drawn on a patient’s face, you can tell how much attention a surgeon pays to detail. If the line is too thick or the ink dissolves easily, even a deviation of just 1 millimeter when making an incision can make scars harder to conceal.
I truly believe that attention to every detail—from before the first incision to the final stitch—is what allows surgical outcomes to meet expectations…and sometimes, even exceed them.
